CHARLIE KOLTAK

I want to track drums on your next record.

It’s my favorite thing to do. I love the adventure of unpacking your songwriting, becoming your fan, customizing a sound to fit your concept, and most of all, delivering results that make you pop out of your seat and say, “Yes!” I live for it.

Take a listen to the short list of song samples I’ve provided. Take a spin through my discography. Check out my references. When you’re ready, give me a shout and let’s talk about what you want to achieve. I look forward to working with you.

About

Charlie Koltak is an American drummer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist. As a session and touring drummer, Charlie has collaborated with artists from across the musical spectrum — from stripped-down singer/songwriters and indie bands, to traditional jazz, R&B and blues.

Along the way, he’s also earned dozens of credits on sessions with the likes of Cory Chisel, Hayward Williams, Cameron McGill, Coyote Brother, Judah Johnson, and Saturday Looks Good to Me.

Some of his musical highlights include opening for Cheap Trick in front of 10,000 fans and performing/recording with guitarist/songwriter/producer Blake Mills.

In addition to playing drums, Charlie has also earned recording credits for vocals, guitar, bass, organ, piano, producing, engineering, arranging for horns/strings and songwriting. Charlie plays C&C drums and Zildjian cymbals.

Charlie lives with his wife and children in Chicago where he continues to teach, perform, write and record music. In his downtime, Charlie is usually cruising around the neighborhood on a skateboard with his kids.

Testimonials

"I've made 4 albums with Charlie and plan to continue working with him indefinitely. He can play any style. He always finds a way to remain tasteful, yet memorable. A joy to work with." - Hayward Williams

"I love that he loves what he does; it enriches my songs and my playing of them. He brings his most interested self to the projects he joins. It shows. We're making our second record together right now, and I can say with all certainty, that Charlie's presence (behind the drums, and in the room) has made me better at what I do. Has made the songs better. Has made the records better. I won't make another one without him." - Cameron McGill

“Charlie has great feel. He also has great style. But the thing that I’ve appreciated most making multiple records with him on the kit is the writer in him. He thinks like a songwriter, because he is, and that means that he knows how to arrange himself. He remembers to put hooks in the drum parts. There are a lot of great players out there but drummers with his writerliness are rare in my experience.” - Daniel Johnson
